daybeds look very short to sleep on... how does and average size adult sleep on a daybed?
I live in a studio.... are daybeds practical for a average height person? The pictures that I see of them, seem like you have to be awfully short to sleep on it.

Daybeds use standard Twin sized mattresses. They appear smaller because they have 3 sides.
I have two suggestions
1. Get a trundle for the day bed. What that will for you is if you have an overnight guest you can pull it out and up to the height of the other bed to allow another sleeper. Also you can hook them together to make a king sized bed if you are ...ummm...entertaining a special guest. This will turn the bed into a king sized bed. To set it up you will need to get a rubberized channel to go between the mattresses and wire tie the frame.
2. Get a double bed and put a king sized headboard along the wall side. Then have extra large wedges made for it at a fabric store that can cut foam. This will allow you to have the advantage of the double bed while still being comfortable for seating.
In either case have 2 covers for the bed. One with a plastic lining for daytime and one to sleep with.
