Slats are more susceptible to breaking. This is because unlike a boxspring there is nothing to absorb the energy from our body weight. (Whatever that might be). Home Depot and Lowes may not be able to make such a small cut. Besides that they will charge you.
Your one poster is correct, use a hardwood like oak for example. Save money and cut the slat to the proper length yourself with a handsaw, circular saw or jigsaw.

I have had the same problem with IKEA slat base beds. They use cheap pine for the slats and I think that such beds are designed more for sleeping than other more...uh...how shall I say this...energetic bedtime activities? (maybe that is the reason why they have such a low birth rate in Scandinavia -- everyone is too afraid of breaking their IKEA slat beds to have a good go at it.)
One solution is to buy a flat metal spring to replace all the slats. That's what I did. It actually makes the bed stronger, too, because the steel frame around the edge keeps the wooden bed frame more square. A full depth box spring under the matress will do the same but then the bed will be higher and of course they are more pricey. With wood being so expensive now, the steel flat spring would be the cheaper solution. A set of replacement slats from IKEA is $30 or $40 depending on the size (and they will just break again.)
