should a 13 year old boy buy his own bed, mattres, bookcase, paint his room, dresser, boombox...?

Why not?
Surely a 13-year old boy is no less competent than a 12-year old girl, and that was how old I was when I redecorated my room by (primarily -- height and strength issues) myself. Dad showed me the correct way to paint, Mum took me to stores to pick out the things I wanted/needed.
However, financially, the burden should not be totally on his shoulders.

You should be able you help pick your furnishing out but your parents should be the ones to buy it.
They will also have to learn about what is the best because of the construction of it as to what will last.
AS far as the mattres. The construction is very important. You back and neck and whole body needs a good contruced mattress for your body n ow and in the future.

i think if your parents are going to pay for it you obviously shouldnt be picking things that are outrageously expensive, but you couuld pick your own stuff. and if you rent a place they probably wont let you paint because you have to change it back before you move out.
my kids are still toddlers and they got to pick what kind of bed they wanted and the blankets and pillows.

If the child has a bed in a bedroom that is clean and comfortable and he thinks he needs more then yes he should be required to buy the things he thinks he needs. A parent should provide a bed and dresser or some way to store clothes. If a child thinks he needs more then it is up to him to take care of it unless the parents are willing to help. Just because the child might htink his room needs to be remodeled does not mean that it does.
A boy of this age should have responsibilites but I dont agree that they should provide the way. That is the parents responsibility. As for having him help in making decisions in his room and actually executing them YES he should be able to do so. Cleaning, painting and organizing should be things that he can do. In allowing him to pull his room together he may be more appreciative and keep his room picked up. Something called PRIDE.
He shouldnt have to pay for any of it. The parents should pay for it all but the 13 yr old should have to help in painting and getting it all set up. Unless of course the stuff you already have is still good and you dont need new stuff. And of course, within reason, unless your rich, you dont need very expensive stuff.
i don't think he should buy things like the furniture for his room but i would let him paint his room because he has to live in it and he should be able to be comfortable in it right? the boombox i would let him paint but only if it was one of those cheap like $20 ones that maybe he bought himself, but if it's an expensive then no.
In short NO ! Give me a break all you idiots who say "when I was your age, I bought this or that". Cost of living is rediculous and child labor laws are in effect now, not then. The cost for bed, mattress, bookcase, dresser, paint, stereo = over $1500. This is an embarrassment to your parents.................................................................. They need to cough up some cash for your needs not wants. Ya you can paint it yourself. If they won't provide go to www.freecycle.org
great way to get free stuff.
