Will a daybed be usable if the back panel is removed?
It's a great mahogany daybed and all the panels are detachable.
I'd hate to remove the panel and have the bed collapse on my second night. Apart from the possible physical injury, I'm sure the tenant downstairs doesn't want a skylight.
Yes, my building is that old.

The back panel is what holds the daybed "square". If you take off the back panel there will be nothing to keep the bed from wobbling back and forth or collapsing. It could either collapse inward and crush you under the sides, or it could collapse to the left or the right and crush either your feet or your head under the sides.
Putting it against the wall won't help because it can still collapse.
I'd say unless you want a skylight , or a stay in the hospital, don't do it.
If you don't want to have a daybed, buy a regular twin size bed and just use the mattress from the daybed.
If you really don't want to buy a bed, I suppose you could put braces on the legs all the way around the daybed to keep it "square", but that won't look very nice and probably will cost about the same as buying a twin bed.
